A group of Year 7 students and teachers from Himalaya Secondary School recently took part in a field trip to the temple of Ichangu Narayan. This temple is situated about 3km from Swayambhu just outside the Ring Road from the Buddha Park. The existing temple was built in the 1700's as far as I can establish but stands on a site where the original shrine dates back to around 1200 AD.
The main purpose of the trip seems to have been related to the environment which is a very good topic for schools in Kathmandu with the extremely poor standards of water, hygiene and sanitation everywhere to be seen. The children and staff took part in a clean-up of the temple area and also provided some food and drinks for the young orphaned children in the local Children's Development Centre.
The photographs show some of their activities and we are pleased to see the teachers involved in the cleaning too which is not so common in Nepal. Too often many will stand back and let others do the work and this is a good example of some of the values we will be trying to promote in our April programme of training. (Respect and Cooperation).

Namaste Himalaya Secondary School
It is heartwarming to see your visit to Ichangu Narayan Temple. Your city is such a rich learning resource that appreciating and caring for its treasures must be of great benefit to the students in your school.
