A little bit of "Magic"!

As a learning organisation here at NSA we are constantly challenging and developing ourselves in terms of our staff, our programmes and our processes. To highlight this, Sangita one of our Education Consultants from Kathmandu, is currently undergoing training in the UK involving formal courses and in-school work in Cumbria. As well as receiving the obvious personal development she is absorbing lots of child centred techniques, and knowledge related to Accelerated Maths, Assessment For Learning, and school measurement systems. The objective is for her to return to Nepal and create/apply the new knowledge.

One of the formal courses she is attending is on a technique called "Magical Spelling". The training is being run by Cricket Kemp at Haverigg Primary School and being attended by Sangita, Champa and a couple of teachers from the school.
At a simplistic level Magical Spelling is based on Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and children accessing word in their memory VISUALLY. So either by closing their eyes or "seeing inside their heads" they can see a word they already know and spell it. This is a gross oversimplification but it is a technique which definitely works and we intend to add it either as a separate workshop or added to our English courses in Kathmandu. Possibly, it may be applicable to learning Nepali, which means we would run it as a separate workshop, but we need more experience of the technique before we decide this.
