United Nations-Milennium Development Goals

Achieving Universal Primary Education

The UN's Milennium Development Goals for 2015
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Develop a global partnership for development

Leading on from the Millenium Summit in 2000, the UN established these goals with it's 189 member states of which Nepal is one. These goals address the fact that not enough recognition has been given to some of the world's main development challenges, which it was recognised can only be achieved with global political support and strong partnerships with coordinated efforts.
The government of Nepal signed up to these goals and have recently issued an assessment of progress to date in the country. Obviously our major interest is in Goal 2 Achieving Universal Primary Education and the assessment report states "it is unlikely that this goal will be attained". Specifically the report states:
  • There are great improvements in net primary enrolment, from 64% in 1990 to around 90% today
  • However serious concerns remain about the quality of primary education and the low completion rates:
1. The quality issues can only be addressed by a child-friendly environment in schools
2. Completion rates can be addressed through measures to increase the inclusiveness of education, and targetted policy to help the people in the poorest economic quintile groups.

These goals and the recent assessment report serve to highlight the role of groups like Nepal Schools Aid. Our focus is directly serving one of the UN Development Goals.
